Silvopasture a Sustainable Livestock Production System


 The other widely used agroforestry technique was silva pasture, which involves managing both livestock and woody crops together. Managing forage, trees, and animals are what it's all about. As a result, many oak trees here are spaced 60 feet apart because I want to have these enormous, gigantic open-grown oaks in my oak savannah, along with most of the shrubs you see. This is not the same as letting your cattle run loose in your woodlot.

This specific area of walnut has never had any equipment in it; it has only ever been managed by grazing animals, usually pigs but occasionally cattle. What you can see here on the right is a stunning mulberry tree, which is currently prohibited in the state of Wisconsin due to its invasiveness.

Why would we decide to forbid 

This is an outstanding miracle marvel plant, and the pigs are on the mulberry trees when they begin to bear here, say around July 4th, and lasting until September. They are content pigs with purple noses and rump hair.

This year, an intriguing thing occurred when a Cooper's Hawk started using the hazel brush. You should be aware that the hens are a type of shrubland or jungle bird, and the hazelnuts give them extra food. There are a variety of bugs in there, and when the nuts are nearby, they devour them. There are many different types of bugs in the ground; they enjoy the scratch and duff underneath because it protects them from aerial predators.

For most of the year, Bradley, a Cooper's Hawk, has been decimating our flock of hens. The guineas have become very savvy to Bradley, and it has been incredibly intriguing to see it all unfold. The hens are now beginning to pay more attention to the guineas, but they still don't fully understand it. I wonder if we'll have more or fewer hens to get us through the summer.

People frequently inquire, "Don't you have a problem with predators?" even though you don't lose all of your hens to them. "Yeah, not with the clever chickens," it's like. And do those hens have the such foolish appearance, if you look at them? Jurassic chickens, who are fearless and capable of having a soul, are what those little farm hens look like instead. Of course, my favorite animals are the pigs.

Seasonal Farmers

 Work with some farmers who are Nyman Ranch producers, and they aim for a July delivery because they receive a paid premium for that. As a result, they will give birth in February and by May, they will know whether the pig will reach weight; if not, I will purchase all of their undersized pigs. Therefore, it's advantageous for them because it's a bit larger than a 30-pound feeder pig.

Therefore, it benefits both of us quite a bit. I put rings in their noses to prevent them from tearing up the pasture because the grass is crucial for pumping liquid carbon into the soil for fertility and it's essential for the cattle to graze. Of course, there is a whole potential for erosion, and the pigs' diet probably consists of the majority of grass every day. Per pig, they receive roughly a cup and a half.

They must obtain whatever they require for growth from their environment, which includes the grass, their first woody crops (currents and raspberries), the mulberries, which begin in July and are followed by early apples and cherries, the hazelnuts that begin to appear in August, and not only the hazelnuts but also all the cleaning supplies they need from the bushes in their paddock.

They are slender; it is clear that these are not fat pigs. They will reach their maximum size around the middle of September. However, once the chestnuts begin to fall, they immediately swell up, and it's really, really lovely. This fat is largely unsaturated. It will consist of roughly one-third oil and two-thirds fat.

Then, you're trying to knock it off the spoon and all that; you don't want to push it off with your finger because that would be disgusting; instead, just get the pig oil and pour it into the pan; everything will be OK.

Thus, this is how things would have been during the early stages of fruit succession; as you can see, this is a newly grafted tree; the area beneath it was not an orchard when the trees were first planted. Comfrey formed the border, followed by a band of Jerusalem artichokes, and finally, beneath this particular rose, a large number of alliums, chives, and garlic recently sprouted there.

After 25 years, my grains are virtually a jungle mess. This is rye, clearly, and you can see comfrey growing inside. There are also irises growing underneath.

And since 1995, I haven't sprayed any pesticides on my produce. In order to cultivate a great lot of whatever it is and sell the ideal stuff, I've never used pest disease control treatments on either my organic vegetables or my fruit. The pigs get to clean up the imperfect items. I would have gotten mushrooms and daffodils if you looked at the fruit on that tree that has already sprouted elsewhere in this identical location.

The first wild pollinators are present and are already proliferating because the daffodils bloom approximately three weeks before the apples do. Conveniently, it takes them three weeks to raise their second generation. Now, when your apples are in blossom, you can find the second generation of pollinators right there.

After the daffodils, the iris bloom, followed by the apples, which of course provide honey and wax, and then the pigs are placed in the area to catch the June drop in the early summer. At this point, there are already five crops growing and it is not even sprung.

Since we have now harvested seven crops but not one apple, we will need a period in the fall when the pigs are not here. Before harvest, I'll mow once to make it easy to enter. After going through and gathering the low-hanging fruit and putting it in bins, I leave the remaining items for the pigs to eat. I'll let the pigs go after that. Through it all, they graze.

Apple scab can only splash up about three feet since it is splashed from leaves and spores on the ground. If you cut the lower three feet of your lower apple trees, which is equivalent to taking the lower five feet off your trees, you will have almost no apple scab.
